Obsolete ATM Product Guide & Recommendations

Overview of the ATM Manufacturers

“With so many ATMs on the market, what’s the right choice for my financial institution?” Well, that’s a great question. At Equips, our mission is to help Financial Institutions make the best choice for your business…so you came to the right place!  When you’re in the market for a new ATM, there are three primary ATM Manufacturers who produce financial grade ATMs: NCR, Diebold Nixdorf and Nautilus Hyosung. To understand the ATM market today, it’s important to know where it started and where it’s going.

History of the ATM

While these machines have come a long way since their origins in the 1960s, the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) revolutionized the banking world from the beginning. The first ATM was used at a Barclays Bank outside of London. It wowed customers by providing financial transactions without the need of a cashier or teller. In honor of the British origins, here is the Oxford English definition of the ATM: An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a machine that dispenses cash or performs other banking services when an account holder inserts a bank card. -Oxford Dictionary

The ATM continued to evolve and new functionality was developed over the subsequent decades. In the early aughts, Check 21 was passed in the US that allowed for the development of remote deposit capture and the image-enabled ATM was born.

Future Opportunities & Recommendations

While researching ATMs for your current business needs, it’s important to think about growing trends within the FI markets. As we move towards a Post-Pandemic Era, it’s clear that ITMs are becoming very popular. Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs) are a new technology utilizing Bank Teller video conferencing to allow for a wider range of transactions.  Let’s see how these three manufacturers differ in their hardware and service offerings:

NCR

  • First to market with ITM technology through the acquisition of uGenius.
  • Interactive Bank Tellers communicate via live video conference:
    • Enables tellers to be located anywhere.
    • Enables efficient human resource management.
    • The remote teller controls the actions of the hardware.
  • Limited core integrations – most deployments require video teller availability.
  • Recycling technology available though network support is not widely certified.
  • Interactive Banker solution allows a one-to-many servicing in the branch – giving customers the option of how they want to interact.
  • Product available both directly from NCR as well as their nationwide reseller channel.
  • Maintenance available both directly from NCR as well as from their certified and supported partners.

DIEBOLD

  • Later to adopt video technology into their hardware.
  • Initially deployed as video call center support with no control of the peripherals.
  • Recycling technology available though network support is not widely certified.
  • In-Branch Assist allows a one-to-many servicing in the branch – giving customers the option of how they want to interact.
  • The product is only sold directly from Diebold.
  • Maintenance is very limited and does not allow a Financial Institution to have options to optimize performance.

HYOSUNG

  • Initial deployments were highly customized to the large Financial Institution(s) specifications.
  • Very flexible offering in terms of functionality and form factors.
  • The most available core integrations allowing for assisted self-service – human interaction when the customer needs, and self-service when they do not.
  • The most efficient human resource management because of the assisted self-service model.
  • Recycling technology available though network support is not widely certified.
  • The tablet-assisted solution allows a one-to-many servicing in the branch – giving customers the option of how they want to interact.
  • Product available both directly from Hyosung as well as their nationwide reseller channel.
  • Maintenance available both directly from Hyosung as well as from their certified and supported partners.
